A spectral element library has beendeveloped and integrated with the M3D extended MHD code. The currently used linear triangular finite element implementation andthe newhigh orderquadrilateralspectral element implementationaredirectly compared on equilibrium, linear stability, and nonlinear evolution calculations run on the same problems.
