This paper is intended to be a first step towards the continuous dependence of dynamical contact problems on the initial data as well as the uniqueness of a solution. Moreover, it provides the basis for a proof of the convergence of popular time integration schemes as the Newmark method. We study a frictionless dynamical contact problem between both linearly elastic and viscoelastic bodies which is formulated via the Signorini contact conditions. For viscoelastic materials fulfilling the Kelvin-Voigt constitutive law, we find a characterization of the class of problems which satisfy a perturbation result in a non-trivial mix of norms in function space. This characterization is given in the form of a stability condition on the contact stresses at the contact boundaries. Furthermore, we present perturbation results for two well-established approximations of the classical Signorini condition: The Signorini condition formulated in velocities and the model of normal compliance, both satisfying even a sharper version of our stability condition.

An efficient and accurate method for solving the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation in domains exterior to elongated obstacles is developed in this paper. The method is based on the so called transformed field expansion (TFE) coupled with a spectral-Galerkin solver for elliptical domain using Mathieu functions. Numerical results are presented to show the accuracy and stability of the proposed method.

A high-order leap-frog based non-dissipative discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method for solving Maxwell's equations is introduced and analyzed. The proposed method combines a centered approximation for the evaluation of fluxes at the interface between neighboring elements, with a $N$th-order leap-frog time scheme. Moreover, the interpolation degree is defined at the element level and the mesh is refined locally in a non-conforming way resulting in arbitrary level hanging nodes. The method is proved to be stable under some CFL-like condition on the time step. The convergence of the semi-discrete approximation to Maxwell's equations is established rigorously and bounds on the global divergence error are provided. Numerical experiments with high-order elements show the potential of the method.

The numerical solution of large scale multi-dimensional convection diffusion equations often requires efficient parallel algorithms. In this work, we consider the extension of a recently proposed non-overlapping domain decomposition method for two dimensional time dependent convection diffusion equations with variable coefficients. By combining predictor-corrector technique, modified upwind differences with explicit-implicit coupling, the method under consideration provides intrinsic parallelism while maintaining good stability and accuracy. Moreover, for multi-dimensional problems, the method can be readily implemented on a multi-processor system and does not have the limitation on the choice of subdomains required by some other similar predictor-corrector or stabilized schemes. These properties of the method are demonstrated in this work through both rigorous mathematical analysis and numerical experiments.

This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem for the modified Helmholtz equation in an infinite strip domain $0 <x\le 1$, $y\in R$. The Cauchy data at $x=0$ is given and the solution is then sought for the interval $0< x\le 1$. This problem is highly ill-posed and the solution (if it exists) does not depend continuously on the given data. In this paper, we propose a fourth-order modified method to solve the Cauchy problem. Convergence estimates are presented under the suitable choices of regularization parameters and the a priori assumption on the bounds of the exact solution. Numerical implementation is considered and the numerical examples show that our proposed method is effective and stable.

In this paper, the Fourier collocation method for solving the generalized Benjamin-Ono equation with periodic boundary conditions is analyzed. Stability of the semi-discrete scheme is proved and error estimate in $H^{1/2}$-norm is obtained.
