A vortex ring impacting a three-dimensional bump is studied using large eddy simulation for a Reynolds number Re=$4$x$10^4$ based on the initial diameter and translational speed of the vortex ring. The effects of bump height and vortex core thickness for thin and thick vortex rings on the vortical flow phenomena and the underlying physical mechanisms are investigated. Based on the analysis of the evolution of vortical structures, two typical kinds of vortical structures, i.e., the wrapping vortices and the hair-pin vortices, are identified and play an important role in the flow state evolution. The boundary vorticity flux is analyzed to reveal the mechanism of the vorticity generation on the bump surface. The circulation of the primary vortex ring reasonably elucidates some typical phases of flow evolution. Further, the analysis of turbulent kinetic energy reveals the transition from laminar to turbulent state. The results obtained in this study provide physical insight into the understanding of the mechanisms relevant to the flow evolution and the flow transition to turbulent state.

This article deals with the numerical solution to the magneto-thermo-elasticity model, which is a system of the third order partial differential equations. By introducing a new function, the model is transformed into a system of the second order generalized hyperbolic equations. A priori estimate with the conservation for the problem is established. Then a three-level finite difference scheme is derived. The unique solvability, unconditional stability and second-order convergence in $L_{\infty}$-norm of the difference scheme are proved. One numerical example is presented  to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

This paper aims at investigating the resonance frequencies and stability of a long Graphene Nano-Ribbon (GNR) carrying electric current. The governing equation of motion is obtained based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam model along with Hamilton's principle. The transverse force distribution on the GNR due to the interaction of the electric current with its own magnetic field is determined by the Biot-Savart and Lorentz force laws. Using Galerkin's method, the governing equation is solved and the effect of current strength and dimensions of the GNR on the stability and resonance frequencies are investigated.

In present paper, the locomotion of an oblate jellyfish is numerically investigated by using a momentum exchange-based immersed boundary-Lattice Boltzmann method based on a dynamic model describing the oblate jellyfish. The present investigation is agreed fairly well with the previous experimental works. The Reynolds number and the mass density of the jellyfish are found to have significant effects on the locomotion of the oblate jellyfish. Increasing Reynolds number, the motion frequency of the jellyfish becomes slow due to the reduced work done for the pulsations, and decreases and increases before and after the mass density ratio of the jellyfish to the carried fluid is 0.1. The total work increases rapidly at small mass density ratios and slowly increases to a constant value at large mass density ratio. Moreover, as mass density ratio increases, the maximum forward velocity significantly reduces in the contraction stage, while the minimum forward velocity increases in the relaxation stage.

In this paper the problem $-{\rm div}(a(x,y)\nabla u)=f$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a square is solved iteratively with high accuracy for $u$ and $\nabla u$ using a new scheme called "hermitian box-scheme". The design of the scheme is based on a "hermitian box", combining the approximation of the gradient by the fourth order hermitian derivative, with a conservative discrete formulation on boxes of length 2$h$. The iterative technique is based on the repeated solution by a fast direct method of a discrete Poisson equation on a uniform rectangular mesh. The problem is suitably scaled before iteration. The numerical results obtained show the efficiency of the numerical scheme. This work is the extension to strongly elliptic problems of the hermitian box-scheme presented by Abbas and Croisille (J. Sci. Comput., 49 (2011), pp. 239--267).

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems in microchannels play prominent roles in many engineering applications. The present study is an effort towards the simulation of flow in microchannel considering FSI. Top boundary of the microchannel is assumed to be rigid and the bottom boundary, which is modeled as a Bernoulli-Euler beam, is simulated by size-dependent beam elements for finite element method (FEM) based on a modified couple stress theory. The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) using D2Q13 LB model is coupled to the FEM in order to solve fluid part of FSI problem. In the present study, the governing equations are non-dimensionalized and the set of dimensionless groups is exhibited to show their effects on micro-beam displacement. The numerical results show that the displacements of the micro-beam predicted by the size-dependent beam element are smaller than those by the classical beam element.

An investigation is carried out on mixed convection boundary layer flow of an incompressible and electrically conducting viscoelastic fluid over a linearly stretching surface in which the heat transfer includes the effects of viscous dissipation, elastic deformation, thermal radiation, and non-uniform heat source/sink for two general types of non-isothermal boundary conditions. The governing partial differential equations for the fluid flow and temperature are reduced to a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations which are solved analytically using the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Graphical and numerical demonstrations of the convergence of the HAM solutions are provided, and the effects of various parameters on the skin friction coefficient and wall heat transfer are tabulated.  In addition, it is demonstrated that previously reported solutions of the thermal energy equation given in [1] do not converge at the boundary, and therefore, the boundary derivatives reported are not correct.

We propose two variants of tailored finite point (TFP) methods for discretizing two dimensional singular perturbed eigenvalue (SPE) problems. A continuation method and an iterative method are exploited for solving discretized systems of equations to obtain the eigen-pairs of the SPE. We study the analytical solutions of two special cases of the SPE, and provide an asymptotic analysis for the solutions. The theoretical results are verified in the numerical experiments. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed schemes effectively resolve the delta function like of the eigenfunctions on relatively coarse grid.
